Portrait de Burton B Wright

Burton approached life with the curiosity of both a classicist and an engineer, never losing his desire to understand how things worked and how they might work better. As Plutarch wrote, “The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” Burton kept that fire burning throughout his life.

Nécrologie de Burton B Wright

Burton B. Wright lived a life defined by curiosity, intellect, adventure, family and an enduring desire to understand how things worked—and, whenever possible, to make them work better.

Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Burton and Elizabeth Wright, Burton grew up in Kingston, the oldest of five boys. He graduated from Webb School of Knoxville and Washington and Lee University before moving to Lexington, Kentucky, where he earned a master’s degree in Classical Languages from the University of Kentucky. It was at UK that he met his future wife, Lisa Ischer.

Burton later moved to Toronto to pursue a Ph.D. in Classics. During his second year, he realized that while he loved Classics, teaching was not his life’s passion. So Burton and Lisa began the first great adventure of their married life: they packed virtually everything they owned into a crate and a car and headed to California, where Burton pursued a career in the emerging technology industry.

In the summer of 1995, Amy and I went to California for a week to visit B and Lisa. We went on a road trip, our guide was California on a budget. We lef
